Book Repairs  –  Kirkeskuden

Repair: Split Spine Seam

This was a repair to a Danish book that had a split along the spine hinge.

I used some white book cloth to bridge the gap, however, I was going to buy some ink to recolour it but ChatGPT said that acrylic would be better so I spent £20-30 on some acrylics, vetting them with ChatGPT. I think ChatGPT thought that the colour finished would be better, however, it was a terrible idea because whilst the first coat blends into the fabric, it actually dried quickly and created a solid surface, and when I tried to add a bit of white to lighten it, instead of blending it just created a clear white steak on top of the blue I had added. ChatGPT apologised for wasting my money. I guess I can use the acrylic for other repairs. Ideally I would have liked to lighten the blue, but any additional layers will build up the coating and quite likely chip easily. You can just about make out the cloth fix. I didn't get the edge that straight, but whilst the colour and coating is not great, the repair is moderately effective. Not sure how the pros would fix such a broken seem.
