English Off We Go Series - Book Three (1974) by Kenneth Anderson – Hulton Educational Publications
There was a time when learning English came with proper textbooks, carefully structured exercises and illustrations that seemed quietly confident everyone involved would eventually understand what an adverb was.
English Off We Go Series - Book Three, published by Hulton Educational Publications in 1974, belongs very much to that age.
Written by Kenneth Anderson, this is part of a graded English series designed to develop reading, comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and written expression without the assistance of spellcheck, autocorrect, artificial intelligence or a helpful little underline appearing beneath every mistake.
Instead, pupils were expected to read the passage, understand the question and then — in a shocking display of personal responsibility — write the answer themselves.
The title Off We Go has a wonderfully optimistic quality to it, suggesting that mastering English is simply a matter of opening the book and proceeding cheerfully forward. Presumably nobody mentioned irregular verbs, subordinate clauses or the terrifying moment when a teacher asked someone to explain the difference between “their”, “there” and “they’re”.
Book Three would have been aimed at pupils already partway through their English studies, building upon earlier work and introducing increasingly sophisticated language tasks. The emphasis is practical and educational, with the unmistakable tone of a textbook that genuinely believes improvement will occur if everyone simply pays attention.
And perhaps it did.
Published in 1974, this is also a lovely little piece of educational history from an era of exercise books, chalk dust, wooden desks, overhead projectors and teachers who could silence a classroom simply by putting down their pen.
The language, examples and presentation inevitably reflect their period, which gives the book an extra layer of interest today. Vintage schoolbooks are often unintentionally fascinating because they preserve not only teaching methods but also the assumptions, everyday situations and vocabulary of their time.
For anyone who attended school in the 1970s, there may also be the dangerous possibility of recognition.
Perhaps you remember books like this being handed out at the beginning of a lesson. Perhaps you remember carefully writing your name inside the front cover. Perhaps you remember being told not to draw moustaches on the illustrations.
Naturally, somebody always did.
This copy is in Fair condition, which seems entirely appropriate for a schoolbook that has had more than fifty years in which to encounter pupils, desks, satchels, cupboards, house moves and the occasional enthusiastic pencil.
It is not a pristine collector’s copy pretending never to have encountered education. It has age and wear, and looks like a book that has actually performed the job it was printed to do.
That gives it a certain charm.
Ideal for collectors of vintage educational books, teachers interested in changing classroom methods, social historians, nostalgic former pupils or anyone who wants to see how English was taught before grammar became something people argued about on the internet.
It would also make an excellent gift for somebody who insists “standards were higher in my day”, although they may then be required to complete the exercises to prove it.
Sold by Crappy Old Books, where old schoolbooks are given another chance, spelling mistakes are judged quietly, and nobody is required to stay behind after class.
