There are sporting events that demand skill. There are sporting events that demand courage. And then there is the Isle of Man TT, a race that has spent more than a century asking perfectly sensible people to hurtle around country roads at speeds that make the average motorway journey seem like a gentle stroll to the post office. Naturally, generations of motorcyclists have responded with, "Sounds marvellous."

Isle of Man TT – A Photographic History by Bill Snelling is a magnificent visual celebration of the world’s most legendary motorcycle race. Published in 2015 by Lily Publications under the SevenOaks imprint, this richly illustrated hardback chronicles well over a century of TT history through an extraordinary collection of photographs, capturing not only the machines and riders, but also the atmosphere, spectacle and evolution of an event unlike any other in motorsport.

Bill Snelling wisely allows the photographs to do much of the talking. Page after page reveals the changing face of the TT, from pioneering riders perched upon wonderfully optimistic early motorcycles to modern competitors who somehow persuade physics to grant them temporary exemptions. Alongside the breathtaking action are quieter moments: mechanics deep in concentration, crowds lining hedgerows, famous corners before the barriers fill with spectators, and the ever-present sense that the Isle of Man becomes something rather special whenever race week arrives.

One of the joys of this book is watching the relentless march of technology while realising that the course itself has remained gloriously indifferent. The roads still twist through villages, climb mountains, sweep past stone walls and disappear into bends that seem to have been designed by someone who misunderstood the concept of self-preservation. The motorcycles have evolved into astonishing feats of engineering; the challenge has remained reassuringly terrifying.

The TT has always occupied a curious place in motorsport. To outsiders it appears gloriously bonkers. To competitors it represents the ultimate test. To fans it is a pilgrimage. And to anyone who has ever tried explaining it to a non-motorcyclist, it usually begins with the phrase, "Well... they’re racing on actual public roads," followed by several increasingly animated hand gestures.

Our copy is in Good condition, which seems entirely fitting for a book celebrating motorcycles that often finish races wearing considerably more evidence of use. It has clearly been appreciated rather than merely stored, yet remains a handsome, solid copy ready to accompany its next owner on countless journeys through TT history. A little honest wear simply adds to the sense that this book has already sparked more than one enthusiastic conversation beginning, "Do you remember Joey Dunlop..." or "That was the year..."

Like every volume rescued by Crappy Old Books, this isn’t simply another second-hand title. It’s a book with its own story, continuing its lap rather than crossing the finish line. Somewhere along the way it has already entertained one enthusiast, and now it’s patiently waiting for another to lose an afternoon leafing through its remarkable images.

Because the Isle of Man TT has never really been about lap times alone. It’s about bravery bordering on the unbelievable, engineering pushed to its limits, and a unique bond between riders, machines and roads that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else. This book captures all of that with style, respect and no shortage of spectacular photography. And unlike tackling the Mountain Course itself, enjoying these pages requires nothing more dangerous than a comfortable chair and perhaps a cup of tea—although you may still find your pulse quickening as the next photograph appears.
