There are mystery novels, there are historical novels, and then there are books like The Song of a Dark Angel, which sound as though they should either be sung by a medieval choir under candlelight or whispered ominously by someone wearing far too much black velvet. Fortunately, P.C. Doherty has absolutely no intention of making life that straightforward.

Set in the wonderfully perilous world of medieval England, where almost every conversation has the potential to end with either a confession, a conspiracy or an unexpected stabbing, this is another finely crafted historical mystery from an author who clearly believed that the Middle Ages were far too interesting to leave to historians. Kings scheme, nobles plot, clergy mutter darkly in stone corridors, and somewhere in the middle of it all someone has committed the sort of murder that proves surprisingly inconvenient for everyone involved.

P.C. Doherty has long been one of the undisputed masters of historical crime fiction. His novels possess that rare ability to make fifteenth-century politics feel every bit as dangerous as modern office politics, only with considerably sharper weapons and fewer passive-aggressive emails. His medieval settings are richly atmospheric without ever descending into pages of architectural appreciation, and his plots twist with enough enthusiasm to keep even seasoned mystery readers guessing.

The title itself deserves admiration. The Song of a Dark Angel sounds magnificently melodramatic, suggesting celestial choirs, forbidden prophecies and perhaps an angel who has become thoroughly fed up with humanity’s behaviour. In reality, the novel offers something arguably even better: an intricate murder mystery wrapped in authentic historical detail, where every shadow conceals another secret and almost nobody appears entirely trustworthy.

Published by Headline in 1994, this is from that glorious period when historical crime fiction quietly flourished before television discovered that everyone secretly enjoys watching people solve murders while dressed in elaborate period costumes. Doherty was already perfecting the formula long before streaming services decided that cloaks automatically improve any detective story.

This copy is in very good condition. It has clearly survived the intervening decades with considerably more dignity than many of the unfortunate souls inhabiting its pages. The binding remains firm, the pages are clean, and it has avoided the sort of treatment medieval justice would almost certainly have recommended for anyone caught bending corners or leaving biscuit crumbs between the chapters.

As always, Crappy Old Books is delighted to rescue another literary survivor from obscurity. Whether you’re already a devoted admirer of P.C. Doherty’s labyrinthine mysteries or simply enjoy books in which every candlelit corridor seems to contain either a secret passage or an imminent corpse, The Song of a Dark Angel delivers exactly the sort of intelligent, atmospheric entertainment that reminds us one comforting truth about history: no matter how complicated modern life feels, at least most meetings no longer end with accusations of treason.
