There are many ways to cause chaos. One can unleash an international criminal conspiracy, misplace a state secret, or, as Agatha Christie memorably suggests in A Cat Among the Pigeons, simply introduce a murder into an otherwise respectable girls’ school and watch the complications multiply.
Published here in a 1969 Fontana Books edition, this delightfully intricate mystery begins with an apparently unlikely setting for homicide. A prestigious school for young ladies seems, on the face of it, an environment more suited to examinations, hockey matches and stern lectures about conduct than violent crime. Christie, naturally, views this assumption as a challenge rather than an obstacle.
The novel combines several of her favourite ingredients: murder, secrets, mistaken assumptions, hidden identities and a collection of suspects who are all considerably more interesting than they initially appear. By the time events are fully underway, readers will find themselves navigating espionage, stolen jewels, suspicious behaviour and enough red herrings to stock a moderately successful fish market.
One of the great pleasures of the book lies in its setting. Christie had a particular gift for transforming seemingly tranquil locations into arenas of delightful suspicion. Here, the orderly routines of school life are gradually invaded by mysteries that refuse to respect timetables, school rules or common sense.
There is a wonderful irony in the title itself. Once a cat appears among pigeons, everybody knows what will happen next. The pigeons become alarmed, order collapses and confusion reigns supreme. Christie applies exactly the same principle to human beings. Introduce one disruptive element into a carefully organised environment and all sorts of hidden truths begin fluttering into view.
Readers familiar with Christie’s work will enjoy watching the machinery operate at full efficiency. Clues are scattered with deceptive casualness. Characters reveal more than they intend. Solutions appear obvious until they suddenly aren’t. The author remains several moves ahead, quietly rearranging the pieces while readers confidently pursue entirely the wrong theories.
The book also offers a reminder of why Christie remains so enduringly popular. Her mysteries possess a peculiar elegance. However tangled the plot becomes, there is always the sense that everything will eventually fit together with satisfying precision. Few writers have ever been better at creating confusion while simultaneously maintaining complete control.
This 1969 Fontana Books edition remains in good condition and comes from the shelves of Crappy Old Books. There is a little scribble on the inside rear cover, evidence that a previous owner felt compelled to leave some small trace of their existence behind. Otherwise it remains a solid and attractive vintage paperback, ready to confuse and delight a new generation of amateur detectives.
An excellent addition for Christie collectors, mystery enthusiasts, vintage paperback fans or anyone who enjoys the comforting experience of being thoroughly outwitted by one of the greatest crime writers who ever lived. School may be in session, but in Agatha Christie’s world, murder always seems to make the final timetable.
