Some books promise a journey. Katabasis promises a descent, which is a rather different sort of holiday altogether.
In this 2020 collection by Lucía Estrada, the title does a good deal of the work: “katabasis” being that ancient, respectable term for a journey downward — into the underworld, into memory, into the self, or into whatever part of existence feels least inclined to tidy itself up for visitors. Happily, Estrada is not interested in offering a guided tour with signposts and refreshments. This is poetry that prefers shadow, suggestion, and the quiet authority of images that linger rather than explain.
The poems move through themes of loss, transformation, myth, and the fragile business of being human, all delivered in language that feels precise and elusive at the same time. There is a sense of ritual here, as though each piece is part of a larger, half-glimpsed structure — something ancient, something personal, and something that may or may not wish to be fully understood.
It is not a noisy collection. There are no dramatic flourishes demanding applause. Instead, Katabasis works in a lower register, inviting the reader to slow down, read again, and perhaps accept that some meanings prefer to remain just out of reach. The effect is less “answer” and more “atmosphere,” which, depending on your temperament, is either deeply rewarding or faintly suspicious.
This Eulalia Books edition, in good condition, is a neat, understated volume that suits its contents perfectly — thoughtful, compact, and quietly serious. It looks the part of a book that might alter your mood without making a fuss about it.
Ideal for readers of contemporary poetry, myth-inflected writing, and literary descents into the interior landscape. Not so much a book you finish as one you pass through, emerging slightly changed and not entirely certain when it happened.
