An Unsuspecting Spy SIGNED

Ah yes, An Unsuspecting Spy — now upgraded with the one thing every covert operative dreads: a signature.

Geoffrey B. Lewis’s quietly intriguing tale of accidental espionage returns here in SIGNED form, which rather undermines the whole “unsuspecting” business. After all, spies are not generally encouraged to autograph their work. Yet here we are: a story of secrets, shadows, and people who probably didn’t mean to get involved—paired with the author’s own handwritten confirmation that this particular copy has, in fact, been noticed.

The novel itself leans into that peculiarly British flavour of espionage: less martinis and more mild confusion; less explosions and more the creeping realisation that something is not quite right. It is about ordinary people brushing up against extraordinary circumstances, where danger arrives not with a bang but with a polite knock and an envelope that really ought not to have been opened.

And then there is the signature. A small, personal flourish that turns this from a simple reading copy into something faintly conspiratorial—as if the author has quietly said, “Yes, you. You’re in on it now.” Whether that makes you part of the operation or merely a well-equipped observer is, of course, left deliberately unclear.

This Octavo Publishing edition is in Near Fine condition, as sold by Crappy Old Books. A crisp, attractive copy for collectors, spy-fiction enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates the irony of a secretive narrative being so helpfully signed and confirmed.

A discreet little thriller with a not-so-discreet twist of provenance. Handle with curiosity.
