Ah yes, Darkly Dreaming Dexter — the book that asked the awkward question: what if your friendly neighbourhood blood-spatter expert was also the sort of person best not left alone with power tools?

Jeff Lindsay’s cheerfully sinister novel introduces Dexter Morgan, a polite, tidy, professionally useful monster who works for the Miami police by day and pursues a rather more personal hobby by night. It is serial killer fiction with a grim little wink: neat, sharp, blackly comic, and worryingly good at making the reader think, “Well, he does have a point,” before remembering that this is probably how moral collapse begins.

Miami supplies the heat, the glare, the bodies, and the faint sense that everyone is sweating through a bad decision. Dexter supplies the narration: dry, clever, controlled, and just unhinged enough to make the whole thing horribly entertaining. It is crime fiction with a plastic sheet laid down first.

This Vintage edition is in Fair condition, which feels almost thematically appropriate. It has clearly survived contact with the world, much like Dexter himself, though presumably with fewer disposal problems. As sold by Crappy Old Books, it is ideal for fans of dark humour, forensic crime, unreliable narrators, and protagonists who really should not be this likeable.

A nasty little modern cult classic, served cold.
