There are travel books that make you want to go somewhere. A Year in Provence makes you want to go somewhere and immediately complain about the builders once you arrive. Peter Mayle’s hugely beloved classic is the great comfort read for anyone who has ever looked out of a rainy window, sighed dramatically, and decided the answer is obviously a stone farmhouse, a long lunch, and a life conducted at the speed of sunshine.
Mayle and his wife move to Provence with that very English optimism that assumes the universe will be charmed by good intentions. What follows is a year of glorious food, strange local customs, seasonal rituals, and the gradual discovery that “idyllic rural living” is a phrase that contains, hidden inside it, the words dust, delays, mysterious bureaucracy, and men arriving at 11:47 to do a job they said they’d do last month.
The joy of this book is Mayle’s tone: affectionate, amused, and perfectly calibrated between wonder and disbelief. Provence is presented as genuinely enchanting — the landscapes, the markets, the pace of life, the wine, the absurdly good meals that appear as if by law — but also as a place where time behaves differently, commitments are interpretive, and you learn to stop asking “when will it be finished?” unless you enjoy being laughed at kindly. It’s expat life not as heroic reinvention, but as a series of small cultural negotiations conducted over aperitifs.
And the food. Oh, the food. This is one of those books that will make you hungry in a very specific way — not “grab a snack” hungry, but “I should be eating something involving garlic, olive oil, and several courses” hungry. It’s a love letter to the French talent for treating meals as events rather than refuelling stops, and it will leave you with the deep conviction that your own dinner plans are inadequate.
As a snapshot of late-80s Provençal escapism, it’s also oddly soothing: a world of markets and seasons and local characters, written with the gentle humour of someone who knows he’s living a cliché and is enjoying it anyway. It’s not a guidebook so much as a warm bath of atmosphere, perfect for armchair travellers and anyone who likes their comedy dry, their wine plentiful, and their renovation schedules wildly fictional.
This Pan edition is in Good condition — ready to be read on the sofa, on a train, or during a “quick break” that mysteriously turns into you googling villages and convincing yourself you could absolutely pull off linen trousers and a basket of produce.
