Some books arrive quietly. This one arrives like a man in a raincoat at 2am, carrying four bad decisions and a cigarette he absolutely should not light indoors. David Goodis does noir the way alleyways do darkness, naturally, and 4 Novels is basically a value pack of bleak charm, doomed optimism, and people making choices that feel sensible for roughly eight seconds.
This is the 1983 Zomba Books edition (yes, the same Zomba that sounds like it should sell either vinyl records or slightly haunted furniture), complete with a proper ISBN 094639136X, so it can be officially recognised by the systems of civilisation it so clearly mistrusts. And it’s in Good condition, meaning it’s solid, readable, and has the kind of wear that suggests it’s already survived at least one minor emotional catastrophe. Which, frankly, is on-brand.
Best bit: it’s an ex-library copy from Salderdale Libraries. That means it comes with the quiet authority of being Selected By A Committee at some point, then borrowed by a succession of people who thought, “I fancy something light,” and promptly found themselves in a foggy moral swamp. Expect the classic library aura: stamps, labels, maybe a pocket, and that faint sensation you’re being watched by a librarian from 1991 who disapproves of your life choices. There’s something wonderfully ironic about noir living under institutional fluorescent lighting, waiting patiently for someone to take it home and have their faith in humanity gently sanded down.
Goodis is the patron saint of the unlucky. His characters don’t so much chase dreams as drag them behind a bus. The city is never quite friendly, the night is never quite over, and hope is usually something you find in a gutter, briefly admire, then lose again. These novels are hardboiled without the swagger, tender without being sentimental, and grim in that strangely comforting way where you think, “At least my day wasn’t that bad.”
This is a big, bruised bundle of storytelling for anyone who likes their fiction with:
-
streets slick with metaphorical rain,
-
conversations that sound like a dare,
-
and the steady realisation that the universe is not taking calls right now.
Sold by Crappy Old Books, obviously. We specialise in books with history, books with scars, books that have been stamped, shelved, borrowed, returned, and still come back for more. If you want a pristine collector’s trophy, look elsewhere. If you want a thick slab of noir that’s already done community service in Salderdale and is ready for its next tour of duty in your hands, congratulations, you’ve found it.
Bring it home. Read one novel. Promise yourself you’ll go to bed early. Start the next one anyway.
