The Fall of Athens (1965) by Xenophon – MacMillan and Co
Another dusty relic from the grand shelves of history, this 1965 MacMillan edition of The Fall of Athens presents Xenophon’s cool-headed account of a city in decline. While Thucydides gave us the war in high tragic tones, Xenophon picks up the fragments and shows how Athens stumbled into ruin, hubris intact. Expect all the usual delights: hoplites, intrigue, Spartan smugness, and plenty of civic bickering.
Our copy? Well, it’s not going to win any beauty contests. A little worn, a little yellowed – like Athens after the war – but still perfectly readable. If you want pristine, go elsewhere. If you want history with character (and maybe a faint smell of damp libraries), this one’s for you.
This is an ex-school book from Old Palace school in Croydon.
