The New Avengers 1 - House Of Cards

The New Avengers 1 – House of Cards (1976) by Peter Cave (Futura Publications)

From the glory days when TV tie-ins were bashed out faster than Steed could twirl his umbrella, here comes the very first New Avengers paperback. Peter Cave – veteran of pulp paperbacks and quick-turnaround jobs – delivers a brisk little adventure featuring Steed, Gambit, and Purdey (yes, Joanna Lumley before she got permanently stuck in Absolutely Fabulous).

In House of Cards, shadowy conspiracies, dodgy foreign agents, and enough sinister goings-on to keep MI5 busy all unfold with the grace and subtlety of a 1970s action sequence. Expect karate chops, secret lairs, and witty quips that read exactly like they were transcribed by someone who once watched the show with the sound down.

Printed by Futura in 1976, this slice of paperback nostalgia is as gloriously dated as a kipper tie and just as hard to take seriously. Perfect if you like your spy fiction campy, quick, and slightly tatty round the edges – just how we like our stock at Crappy Old Books.
