The Histories – Herodotus (Penguin Classics, 1982)
So, you’ve decided you want to know everything about the ancient world, from the Persian Wars to why Egyptian cats were sacred, and also a fair bit of gossip about gold-digging ants and head-hunting Scythians. Congratulations: you need Herodotus.
This is the 1982 Penguin Classics edition — translated into English you can actually read without needing three espressos and a Latin tutor. It’s the kind of book that looks scholarly on your shelf but is secretly full of wild stories, tall tales, and at least a few questionable “facts” that sound more like pub chat than history.
Our copy? It’s seen better days. The spine creaks like an old trireme, the pages are a bit tanned (let’s call it “antique patina”), and there may or may not be a faint smell of someone else’s attic. But it’s intact, readable, and absolutely crammed with ancient weirdness.
If you want pristine gloss and gold leaf, go elsewhere. If you want a scrappy, well-loved book that’ll teach you about battles, barbarians, and bizarre customs — all while looking like it fought the Peloponnesian War itself — this is your guy.
Crappy Old Books: Lowering your standards, raising your library.
