Rommel (1973) – Charles Douglas-Home (Weidenfeld and Nicolson)

Here we have Rommel, the 1973 biography by Charles Douglas-Home — a thoughtful if slightly dated examination of the “Desert Fox” himself. Published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson back when military history still smelled of pipe smoke and library dust, this volume charts the rise and fall of Erwin Rommel: brilliant field commander, reluctant Nazi favourite, and ultimately a man caught between loyalty, conscience, and Hitler’s madness.

Expect plenty of North Africa, sand, tanks, and the usual moral hand-wringing about whether Rommel was a good German, a bad German, or just a very clever soldier in the wrong army. Douglas-Home, a journalist turned historian, writes with a briskness that makes the book digestible even if you don’t know your Panzer IV from your elbow.

Our copy? Well, it’s seen better days — the dust jacket may be tatty, the pages may be yellowing, and it might smell faintly of someone’s loft — but it’s still a solid slice of 1970s history publishing. Perfect if you’re into World War II, desert warfare, or simply enjoy collecting slightly shabby hardbacks with gravitas.

Pretty good condition overall, the only issue being that the front top of the dust jacket appears to have been nibbled by a hungry reader. What you can see in the scanned image is pretty much all there is to it, the rest of the book being in near fine condition.
