A Confederate General From Big Sur

A Confederate General from Big Sur (1973) by Richard Brautigan | Picador edition
Sold by Crappy Old Books

Step into the strange and whimsical world of Richard Brautigan with A Confederate General from Big Sur, a novel where California is sun-drenched, the hippies are aimless, and the Confederate Army might still have a general hiding out in Big Sur. Brautigan’s first published novel is part tall tale, part existential drift — a loopy, lyrical, and oddly touching story of Lee Mellon, a man convinced he’s descended from a forgotten Confederate hero, and his offbeat companions navigating a post-beat, pre-digital America.

This 1973 Picador edition is pure vintage Brautigan: short chapters, sharp lines, and surreal, melancholic humor — now a little yellowed, a little scuffed, and proudly offered by Crappy Old Books, where the weird ones live on.

Perfect for fans of oddball Americana, failed revolutions, and stories that don’t go anywhere in particular — but get there beautifully.

Nice tidy condition.
