The Clouds (1970) by William Arrowsmith – Crappy Old Books
This 1970 edition of The Clouds by Aristophanes, translated by the inimitable William Arrowsmith and published by The University of Michigan Press, brings biting ancient satire to life with scholarly precision and irreverent wit. A cornerstone of classical comedy, this play skewers Socratic philosophy, Athenian culture, and the general idiocy of mankind—timeless stuff, really.
Arrowsmith’s translation crackles with energy, offering readers a version that’s both faithful to the original Greek and surprisingly modern in tone. Perfect for classicists, students, or anyone who enjoys watching pompous intellectuals get verbally pantsed by a Greek chorus.
Sold by Crappy Old Books—because literature ages better than our shelving units. Gently used, academically abused, and slightly dusty (but in a charming way).
Ex-library book.
The binding is OK, but someone did a repair years ago with masking tape to the inside front two leading pages and it has offset the pages a bit. I also did a better repair between pages 24 and 25 and so the binding is firm, but this is not a specimen copy. Other than that it handles well. Its hardback with dust jacket and outer protective plastic case.
