The Carved Cartoon - A Tale Of Grinling Gibbons

The Carved Cartoon – A Tale of Grinling Gibbons (1972) by Austin Clare
Tom Stacey Reprints edition – proudly offered by Crappy Old Books, where old paper lives on.

Originally published in the 19th century and dusted off for a 1972 revival, The Carved Cartoon is a romanticised, wood-shaving-filled fictional tale inspired by the life and legacy of master woodcarver Grinling Gibbons. Austin Clare weaves historical fancy and Victorian melodrama into a story of artistic obsession, baroque craftsmanship, and the kind of polite peril only a chisel-wielding genius could face.

This Tom Stacey Reprints edition is a lovingly faded paperback that smells faintly of varnish and missed deadlines. Expect yellowed pages, a spine that’s seen better centuries, and cover art that somehow feels both devout and mildly sinister.

Crappy Old Books – Splinters, drama, and forgotten classics. All part of the charm.
