The Beast In Me And Other Animals

The Beast In Me And Other Animals (1949) by James Thurber – Crappy Old Books

From the ever-scribbling mind of James Thurber comes The Beast In Me And Other Animals, a 1949 collection of wit, whimsy, and wonderfully neurotic creatures — both real and imagined. Originally published by Hamish Hamilton, this oddball menagerie blends Thurber’s signature ink-spattered cartoons with sharply drawn prose, skewering everything from domestic life to the daft absurdities of the animal kingdom.

This copy has all the charm you’d expect from a Crappy Old Book: yellowed pages, a suspicious stain or two, and that unmistakable “attic” aroma. But inside? Pure Thurber — clever, cranky, and surprisingly human. Whether you’re a diehard Thurberite or just in it for the pictures of anxious dogs and existential elephants, this beastly little volume belongs on your shelf (preferably wedged between two better-preserved titles).
