Ah, behold the illustrious Volume 81, Number 2 of The Johnian, a literary artifact snatched from the hallowed halls of St Johns School in Leatherhead, circa 1966—an era when bell-bottoms were a style statement and rock ’n’ roll was still trying to convince the older generation that it wasn’t just a passing fad. This treasure trove of youthful musings and earnest adolescent angst is a testament to a time when students were still grappling with the weighty matters of life, love, and the eternal question: what’s for lunch?

The Johnian - Vol 81 No2

The Johnian is the publication of St Johns School in Leatherhead. however, I could not find anything in it that says so. Bit of a fail there on befhalf of the 1966 team. However, I Googled ’The Johnian Churchill house’ and found their recent edition.

Probably only be of interest to you if you went to the school.

The book itself is an enigma wrapped in the peculiarities of teenage life, presenting an array of student writings that range from the profoundly insightful to the utterly bewildering. One cannot help but wonder if the contributors were secretly vying for the title of Most Enthusiastic User of Thesaurus in the school library, given the flamboyant language choices that occasionally pervade the pages. With prose like "the ethereal essence of youth" juxtaposed against the mundane musings about homework, one can’t help but chuckle at the earnestness of it all.

This particular volume captures the essence of student life in the 1960s, a time when the ink was still drying on the first editions of Beatles albums, and young minds were bustling with revolutionary thoughts and questionable haircut choices. You may find essays that wax lyrical about the school’s cricket match against a rival institution—or should we say, the monumental clash of titans—while others may meander into the philosophical realm of why the dining hall’s spaghetti was always a bit on the questionable side.

Imagine, if you will, the scene: a group of fresh-faced students, armed with nothing but fountain pens and unyielding optimism, sprawled across old wooden desks, scribbling furiously in pursuit of scholarly glory. The Johnian was not merely a publication; it was a rite of passage, a badge of honour for those lucky enough to have their musings immortalised in print. For many, it was the pinnacle of achievement before diving headfirst into the murky waters of adult life—where essays on the poetic nature of nature would be replaced by reports on tax audits and office memos.

But let’s not forget the tantalising mystery of its authorship. The fact that no author is attributed adds a delightful layer of intrigue. Was this a concerted effort by a committee of self-proclaimed literary geniuses, or merely a collection of ramblings by a gaggle of enthusiastic first-years? As you leaf through the pages, the anonymity invites you to speculate wildly. Perhaps it was penned by a secret society of students who met under the cover of darkness in the library, sipping tea and discussing the relative merits of classical literature versus the ever-important question of who would play at the next school dance.

  • Unearthly essays that may have been written under the influence of too many biscuits.
  • Poems that are either deeply profound or utterly ridiculous—your call!
  • Review of the school’s play that reads more like a Shakespearean tragedy than a comedy.
  • Advertisements for outdated school events that now seem like relics of a lost era.
  • A charming collection of doodles that might have been the first stirrings of modern art.

Condition: Used, as one might expect from a tome of such venerable age and academic pedigree. Pages may exhibit the gentle creases of time, with a few notable stains that hint at late-night snack sessions fuelling the fervent literary pursuits. The cover bears the proud marks of youthful ownership, with the occasional doodle that reminds one of the fleeting nature of teenage angst. Fear not, fellow seekers of crumpled wisdom; this volume is still very much intact, ready to accompany you on your journey through the (possibly misguided) intellectual musings of youth.
