Repair: Loose Spine Binding

Occasionally I find a book that has just been sold is not 100% perfect and needs a spot of glue in order that the customer doesn't notice. In this instance, the spine at the base was coming away and covers detached, so I put in a dual spine reinforcement and then a set of hinges for the cover.

What you cant really see is what I did. First I created an inner bit of paper from an old stock book of healthy old paper and glued that to the spine and let it dry. However, I didn't glue the original black spine bit down, I left that free. Then I created a shorter wider spine hinge which you can see in one of the images that went round a similar distance to the back, and slid that along the spine over the previous dried spine patch and glued the spine down, but also the front and back covers to that new hinge. I also massaged glue into the eroded hinge area above the repair. The last image demonstrates the cover opening with its new hinge. THe benefit really is that it wont get worse any time soon.
